DIY Night Light Kits: Easy Projects for Kids and Crafters
Making a decorative night light is a fun way to turn a ceramic piece, stained glass shape, seashell, or other lightweight decoration into something functional. The project can be simple enough for a craft class or family activity because the electrical module is already assembled and no wiring is required.
The most important step is choosing the right night light module, bulb, and mounting clip. Some of our kits include all three parts, while module only packs require bulbs and clips to be purchased separately.
Adult supervision required: An adult should install the bulb, apply any adhesive, attach the finished decoration, inspect the night light, and plug it into the outlet. Never open, alter, or attempt to rewire a plug in night light module.
Choose the Right Night Light Kit
Before starting the decorative part of the project, check exactly what is included with the night light product you plan to use.
Complete Kits With Modules, Bulbs, and Clips
A complete kit is the easiest option for an individual project, craft class, pottery studio, or small group.
For an option that includes all the core hardware, the four pack white night light kit includes four plug in modules, four 4 watt bulbs, and four metal mounting clips.
The three pack ivory night light kit is another option. It includes three manual on/off modules, three plastic shade mounting clips, and three 4 watt bulbs. These modules are rated for a maximum 4 watt bulb.
Automatic Sensor Night Light Kits
An automatic sensor module turns on when the room becomes dark and turns off when the room becomes light.
The four pack automatic sensor kit includes four modules, four bulbs, and four metal mounting clips. The modules are rated for bulbs up to 7 watts.
When designing a shade for a sensor model, make sure the decoration does not cover the light sensor.
Module and Bulb Sets Without Mounting Clips
The four pack module and bulb set includes four manual on/off modules and four 4 watt bulbs. Mounting clips are not listed as part of this set, so add compatible clips if you plan to attach decorative shades.
Bulk Module Packs
Bulk packs are useful for studios, classrooms, craft events, and makers who already have compatible bulbs and mounting clips.
The 10 pack of white night light modules includes manual on/off modules. These use standard candelabra base night light bulbs, with 4 watts recommended and 7 watts as the maximum.
Bulbs and mounting clips should be selected separately unless the product description specifically says they are included.
Choose the Right Mounting Clip
The mounting clip connects the decorative piece to the night light module. Choose a clip that provides enough attachment area for the size, shape, and weight of your decoration.
Metal Mounting Clips
Our metal night light mounting brackets have a mounting surface approximately 1½ inches wide and 5/32 inch high.
They are designed to clip onto a compatible night light module and can be used with ceramic, porcelain, seashell, stained glass, and similar decorative pieces.
Plastic Mounting Clips
Our white plastic mounting brackets have a smaller mounting surface approximately ⅝ inch wide and ⅜ inch high.
The product instructions recommend washing and drying the plastic clip to remove surface residue, then lightly roughening the mounting area to improve adhesion. An adult should complete this preparation and apply the appropriate adhesive according to its label.
Whichever style you choose, the finished decoration must remain securely attached without touching the bulb, blocking the switch or sensor, or interfering with the outlet.
DIY Night Light Project Ideas
Paint Your Own Ceramic Night Light
Ceramic bisque is a good choice for painting projects because the creative work can be completed before the electrical parts are assembled.
Children can paint the ceramic piece using the appropriate paint or glaze under adult supervision. If the project requires kiln firing, complete the firing before attaching the mounting clip or any electrical components.

Stained Glass Night Light
A small stained glass shape can create a colorful glow when mounted in front of the bulb. Flowers, butterflies, geometric shapes, stars, and seasonal designs work especially well.
Complete all cutting, grinding, soldering, and cleaning before attaching the finished glass piece to the mounting bracket. These steps should be handled by an experienced adult or completed in a properly supervised stained glass class.
Seashell Night Light
A seashell can make an attractive night light for a bathroom, beach house, bedroom, or coastal themed room. Choose a shell that is lightweight and provides a suitable surface for the mounting clip.
Clean and dry the shell completely before attachment. Avoid unusually heavy, sharp, cracked, or unstable shells.
Seasonal Flickering Night Light
For Halloween, fall, or Christmas projects, a flickering bulb can create a candlelike effect.

How to Assemble a DIY Night Light
1. Choose the Module
Decide whether you want a manual on/off switch or an automatic light sensor. Check whether your chosen product includes bulbs and mounting clips or whether those pieces must be purchased separately.
2. Finish the Decorative Piece
Paint, glaze, solder, seal, or otherwise complete the decoration before attaching any night light hardware. Allow all paint, glaze, finishes, and sealers to dry or cure fully.
3. Prepare the Mounting Clip
Follow the product instructions for the metal or plastic clip. Test its position against the back of the decoration before applying adhesive.
The clip should be centered well enough to keep the finished decoration stable and properly positioned in front of the module.
4. Attach the Decoration
An adult should attach the decorative piece to the mounting clip using an adhesive suitable for the materials. Follow all directions and safety precautions on the adhesive label.
Keep adhesive away from the bulb, socket, switch, sensor, electrical contacts, and plug prongs. Do not attach anything while the module is plugged into an outlet.
5. Allow the Adhesive to Cure
Do not install or test the decoration until the adhesive has cured completely according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The decoration should not shift, wobble, or separate from the clip.
6. Install the Bulb and Clip
With the module unplugged, an adult should install the correct bulb and attach the completed mounting clip to the module.
Make sure the decoration does not touch the bulb, block the on/off switch, cover the sensor, or interfere with either plug prong.
7. Inspect and Test the Night Light
Check the module, bulb, clip, and decoration for cracks, loose parts, sharp edges, or exposed adhesive. Do not use the night light if anything appears damaged or unstable.
An adult can then plug the finished night light directly into an appropriate wall outlet and test its operation. The completed night light is an electrical decoration, not a toy.
Creating Night Light Kits for Classes or Parties
For a craft class, party, pottery studio, or fundraiser, prepare one set of components for each participant.
A complete project set may include:
- One plug in night light module
- One compatible bulb within the module’s stated wattage
- One compatible metal or plastic mounting clip
- One lightweight decorative piece
- Paint, glaze, brushes, or other decorating materials
- Written decorating and assembly instructions
- A clear reminder that final assembly and testing are for adults only
Do not describe a module only pack as a complete kit unless you have also added the required bulbs and mounting clips.
